Motor Vehicles and Bicycles

Parking

As soon as they arrive, students are required to register any motor vehicles with Harvard University Parking Services in the Campus Service Center (8th floor, Smith Campus Center). Vehicle registration is required of all students, regardless whether or not they desire on-campus parking. Parking Services will issue a sticker of compliance to be displayed on the student’s vehicle. Please note that this is not authorization to park on University property. All vehicles parked on University property require a parking permit.

Both resident and non-resident students may apply for parking permits. Parking rates and general regulations are available at the Parking Services website. Students are not permitted to park in areas other than those to which they have been assigned.

University parking regulations are enforced 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including holidays. Students who operate motor vehicles are also required to comply with city ordinances for overnight parking on public streets. Violators are subject to disciplinary action, as well as to penalties imposed by the City of Cambridge.

Note for students in the Pre-College Program: Since the Pre-College program is a residential program, students are discouraged from bringing a vehicle to campus.

Motorcycles and Scooters

Motorcycles may not be parked in the House areas between the hours of 11 pm and 8 am, nor may these vehicles be parked in House courtyards or within the Yard at any time. Motorcycle permits are granted for non-assigned spaces in designated areas within parking facilities. Motorcycles are prohibited from parking on sidewalks or in spaces designated for vehicles. Motorcycle parking is available inside the Peabody Terrace Garage at designated areas. Motorized scooters are considered to be motor vehicles and are subject to all regulations governing the use of motor vehicles on campus. For more information on parking options, please see the Harvard University Parking Services website.

Students with Disabilities

Accessible parking is available to students with documented disabilities. For more information about parking and transportation options, contact the accessibility services office.

Bicycles

Use of bicycles, skateboards, hover boards, and inline skates is forbidden in Harvard Yard, Memorial Hall, and House courtyards. Bicycles are not allowed inside the Yard dorms or Houses. Rack space is provided outside each building.

Students are strongly encouraged to register their bikes with the Harvard University Police Department and to wear a helmet when riding a bicycle. Discounted helmets are available for only $10.00 at the CommuterChoice Office, Smith Campus Center, 8th floor. Payment can be made with cash or check. As Harvard affiliates, students are also eligible for a discounted Hubway BikeSharing Program Annual Membership.

For more information, please visit the bike section of the CommuterChoice website and the Bicycle Safety section of the HUPD website.
